If Yellowstone is out of your range because of time, then the Beartooth highway- "the most beautiful roadway in American" said by On the Road correspondent Charles Kuralt, the Beartooth Highway climbs to an astounding 10,947 feet above sea level. Since it's completion in 1936, the highway has awed visitors with it astonishing views of one of the most rugged and wild areas in the lower 48 states. This day trip gives you the experience of viewing snow-capped peaks, snow fields, glaciers, and plateaus blanketed with tiny wildflowers. Many stops along the way for photo shots and play in the snow.
This road was closed in 2005 due to 12 landslides on the five switchbacks.
Spring of 2007 will bring a special treat to travel the new road with added value of the new history to this roadway.
We will stop at the historic mountain village of Red Lodge. This town offers shopping and foods to represent the many ethic groups that traveled to mine coal, ranch and farm. You will hear stories of the Crow Indians, the mountain men, coal miners, Pony Express riders, world famous cowboys and cowgirls.
